Sharpening serrated or straight blade kitchen knives is relatively easy. Gardening or woodworking tools, on the other hand, can look a bit more challenging to sharpen, especially if you are not an experienced knife sharpener. Still, with a bit of experience and the right sharpener, it is possible to sharpen your own tools, including axes, shears, pruners, and chain saw blades.

When these blades start working poorly, you know it’s time to sharpen them. Instead of taking them to a professional knife sharpener, considering using a sharpener at home. You’ll be able to quickly sharpen those blades and get on with your work, instead of having to take them in another day.

You can sharpen most of these with a simple sharpening file. This metal file has ridges on both sides to remove some of the metal on your blades. Sharpening stones can be used not only on knives but also on these larger tools. There are even specific files for sharpening axes, chainsaw blade teeth, and other tools. Chainsaw blades do require a specific round shape and the size of the file depends on the size of the teeth, so make sure you are using the right one for your chain saw.

Coarser files remove more metal, making them ideal for blades that have been nicked or otherwise damaged by use. Smooth files can make a smooth finish and razor-sharp edge; depending on the tool you are sharpening, you may not need a very smooth file.

To use a file to sharpen your axe, chainsaw blade, or other tool, simply use it as you would for a kitchen knife. Draw the blade across the file, removing metal. Because of the size of the blade, it may be easier to hold the blade in place with a clamp or vise, and then draw the file across the blade. Unlike with kitchen knives, the most important step when dealing with gardening or woodworking tools is that you remove enough of the edge to expose a new surface. At the same time, do not remove too much metal, making the blade too thin, or it will bend or break if you try to use it against a hard surface, like wood.

When sharpening garden tools, especially grass clippers, pruning shears, or similar tools, make sure that you keep the original angle on the blades. Each is designed to have a very specific bevel. Always try to keep this angle when sharpening the blades. Use long strokes, covering as much of the length of the blade as you can on each stroke.

This method does require some practice, but outdoor tools, due to their thickness, are often the best blades to practice your knife sharpening skills on. Other methods for sharpening tools include stones, sharpening wheels, and bench grinders. An electric sharpening wheel or grinder will be the fastest method of removing metal from the edge of the blade, but you don’t need expensive or professional sharpening equipment to keep the edges of your tools sharp. You just need to know how to use the equipment you do choose.

If you have a nice garden, then you probably have a patio of a deck so that you can get every last scrap of enjoyment out of it. Most patio furniture is left outside for a lot of the year so it is best to get high quality garden patio furniture. High quality garden deck furniture is essential if you expect it to withstand the rigours of all kinds of weather and yet last a reasonable length of time too.

Another factor, especially these days, is the ecology. People want to have as little impact on the ecology as possible, thereby reducing their carbon footprint, as they say. The manufacture of plastic involves polluting the environment with more CFC’s and disposal can cause problems too. Plastic can take decades and decades to bio-degrade.

Metal patio garden furniture also has its issues. It has to be mined and fabricated and people are beginning to worry about robbing Mother Earth of her minerals, but at least old metal can be recycled. That leaves us with timber and especially hardwood. Before, there was a great deal of alarm in almost every country about logging, but a lot of countries have the problem under control now after sustained pressure from the West.

Most people understand these days how important it is to look after our planet. There is even a special day to help people remember the Earth’s dire state called ‘Earth Day’. Using hardwood from sustainable sources is the best way to maintain our forests.

Garden furniture made from hardwood from a guaranteed sustainable source is the most ecological way out. If you look after your hardwood furniture according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of wood you have, it will last for a decade or more. Far longer than any plastic or metal furniture, which you might well have to replace every two years or so.

Acacia hardwood offers a hard wearing and comfortable alternative to teak. In fact, this type of wood is much like teak, as if you leave it untreated it will transform to a silvery grey color. However, it is best to treat all hardwood once or twice a year with suitable oil in order to maintain the warm tones of the timber.

Most people will have a garden patio furniture set of up-right chairs, loungers and a table or two or a nest of small tables. However, there are a few other pieces of furniture that will help you get more pleasure from your garden. It is nice to be able to sit in the garden after it gets dark or when it is a bit nippy too. This can be achieved easily with a few accessories.

I suggest a patio heater, an electric mosquito killer and suitable lighting. Patio heaters are not expensive any longer and a single upright propane heater will keep up to eight people warm, depending on their seating pattern. An electric mosquito killer will usually keep a whole garden clear. In fact, some will keep a quarter of an acre or more clear of flying insects. These two items may provide enough light for you, but is best to have a few spots to highlight a plant in bloom or to read by.

Any reliable seed house can be depended upon for good seeds; but even so, there is a great risk in seeds. A seed may to all appearances be all right and yet not have within it vitality enough, or power, to produce a hardy plant.

If you save seed from your own plants you are able to choose carefully. Suppose you are saving seed of aster plants. What blossoms shall you decide upon? Now it is not the blossom only which you must consider, but the entire plant. Why? Because a weak, straggly plant may produce one fine blossom. Looking at that one blossom so really beautiful you think of the numberless equally lovely plants you are going to have from the seeds. But just as likely as not the seeds will produce plants like the parent plant.

So in seed selection the entire plant is to be considered. Is it sturdy, strong, well shaped and symmetrical; does it have a goodly number of fine blossoms? These are questions to ask in seed selection.

If you should happen to have the opportunity to visit a seedsman’s garden, you will see here and there a blossom with a string tied around it. These are blossoms chosen for seed. If you look at the whole plant with care you will be able to see the points which the gardener held in mind when he did his work of selection.

In seed selection size is another point to hold in mind. Now we know no way of telling anything about the plants from which this special collection of seeds came. So we must give our entire thought to the seeds themselves. It is quite evident that there is some choice; some are much larger than the others; some far plumper, too. By all means choose the largest and fullest seed. The reason is this: When you break open a bean and this is very evident, too, in the peanut you see what appears to be a little plant. So it is. Under just the right conditions for development this ‘little chap’ grows into the bean plant you know so well.

This little plant must depend for its early growth on the nourishment stored up in the two halves of the bean seed. For this purpose the food is stored. Beans are not full of food and goodness for you and me to eat, but for the little baby bean plant to feed upon. And so if we choose a large seed, we have chosen a greater amount of food for the plantlet. This little plantlet feeds upon this stored food until its roots are prepared to do their work. So if the seed is small and thin, the first food supply insufficient, there is a possibility of losing the little plant.

You may care to know the name of this pantry of food. It is called a cotyledon if there is but one portion, cotyledons if two. Thus we are aided in the classification of plants. A few plants that bear cones like the pines have several cotyledons. But most plants have either one or two cotyledons.

From large seeds come the strongest plantlets. That is the reason why it is better and safer to choose the large seed. It is the same case exactly as that of weak children.

There is often another trouble in seeds that we buy. The trouble is impurity. Seeds are sometimes mixed with other seeds so like them in appearance that it is impossible to detect the fraud. Pretty poor business, is it not? The seeds may be unclean. Bits of foreign matter in with large seed are very easy to discover. One can merely pick the seed over and make it clean. By clean is meant freedom from foreign matter. But if small seed are unclean, it is very difficult, well nigh impossible, to make them clean.

The third thing to look out for in seed is viability. We know from our testings that seeds which look to the eye to be all right may not develop at all. There are reasons. Seeds may have been picked before they were ripe or mature; they may have been frozen; and they may be too old. Seeds retain their viability or germ developing power, a given number of years and are then useless. There is a viability limit in years which differs for different seeds.

From the test of seeds we find out the germination percentage of seeds. Now if this percentage is low, don’t waste time planting such seed unless it be small seed. Immediately you question that statement. Why does the size of the seed make a difference? This is the reason. When small seed is planted it is usually sown in drills. Most amateurs sprinkle the seed in very thickly. So a great quantity of seed is planted. And enough seed germinates and comes up from such close planting. So quantity makes up for quality.

But take the case of large seed, like corn for example. Corn is planted just so far apart and a few seeds in a place. With such a method of planting the matter of per cent, of germination is most important indeed.

Small seeds that germinate at fifty per cent. may be used but this is too low a per cent. for the large seed. Suppose we test beans. The percentage is seventy. If low-vitality seeds were planted, we could not be absolutely certain of the seventy per cent coming up. But if the seeds are lettuce go ahead with the planting.

In todays market there is a huge choice of lawn mowers, from push and self-propelled mowers to large riding mowers, or lawn tractors, for more sizeable lawns. There are manual lawn mowers, electric mowers, and gasoline engine-powered mowers. The best lawn mowers will both cut and disperse clippings evenly.

The best lawn mowers are rated on their ability to cut by various different methods, which include bagging, mulching and side discharge. Evaluations also take on handling and ease-of-use, a noise evaluation, environmental impact, and last but not the least important safety.

Gasoline engine-powered mowers can have either traditional mower engines or overhead valve engines, but both are considered the worst by environmental organisations. Manual reel lawn mowers are apparently the best, with electric coming second.

There are numerous alternatives available to you with gasoline-powered mowers. Just about all the newer mowers available to you have a blade brake clutch, which allows for the user to stop the blade while leaving the lawn mower running. This is of benefit if it is needed to stop often to get rid of debris, or if there is a gravel drive, this way the mower can be transported without flinging stones.

Easy adjustments are likewise essential, especially when rasing and lowering the height of the cut. Some models will have a lever for each wheel, or just two for the front wheels, while more advanced models permit the user to adjust the height of all four wheels with just one lever.

There are starting alternatives available, as well. The best lawn mowers will start on the first or second pull. Alternatively, some models have a battery and an electric start or key start ignition. This can be a significant weight-adding option, however.

Lawn tractors have decreased significantly in price in the last few years and they have also become very much more versatile around obstacles like shrubs and trees. In addition, most light-duty riding lawn mowers have the ability to add attachments for lawn aerating, towing carts, or even plowing snow. Most models as well permit the user to change speeds and many even have cruise control.

There are a plethora of options to think about when looking for the best lawn mower. Price may be an indicator of performance, but you should always consider the cutting method, handling, noise, the impact on the enviroment and of course ease-of-use.

It is easy to build your own lean-to greenhouse.. A lean-to greenhouse is a type of attached greenhouse and it is one of the easiest greenhouse to build.

It is best for those whose space are very limited. However, before you build your own lean-to greenhouse, you must know there are several advantages and disadvantages of this type of greenhouse structure.

An important thing to keep in mind with this kind of structure is its location. It is very important that its area should give it maximum exposure to sunlight since the house can cover the sun at times. Ideally, the south/southeast side of the house is the best area. Just make sure there are no deciduous trees surrounding that area.

Another important thing to keep in mind when you build your own lean-to greenhouse is the ventilation, heating and irrigation of the greenhouse.

Irrigation may not pose much of a problem since a simple water can can do the job. On the other hand, in planning the design of the greenhouse, ventilation should be considered. For most cases, it could be as simple as opening windows but sometimes, air vents should go into the design if you build your own lean-to greenhouse.

That’s why it’s imperative that you go over many greenhouse plans and designs and from there, you choose which design you can easily implement and best suited to your needs as a grower.

Remember plants and dogs are just like babies you need to look after them like that. Just like you would pamper you child from time to time, you should take give your garden a facelift as well. If you don’t have the time or resources for that make sure you have a few garden basics.

Garden Tools
Every one needs a good gardening kit. It should have all the basic tools like garden scissors, pitch fork, garden hoe, plough, rake and fork. These are just the basics; you can also upgrade to lawn aerators, lawn sweepers and blowers.

Lawn Mower

Trimming the grass is essential for it to grow well and look lush. Having a lawn mower makes everything easier and much simpler. It s blades make sure that the grass is cut evenly. The type and capacity of the mower depends on the length and growth of the lawn. You can choose between reel mowers, rotary movers, electric cord and cordless mowers and riding mowers.

Water feature

You can have a pond constructed and have the most beautiful lotuses and other water plants in it. How about a waterfall? They look beautiful and are not difficult to install. If you are worried about water wastage you need not worry as you now have water fountains that use the same water that doesn’t need to be changed from time to time. If you are looking for something smaller you can install a bird bath. They look beautiful, the children will love it and so will the birds!

Garden Edging

This is an aesthetic feature that has many benefits. Edging frames the garden and segregates the grass from the plant area. This way you can trim the plants easily, protect the plants from weed and ensure that there is no erosion. Garden edging adds a special touch to the space. Edging is available in wood, plastic, metal and concrete. You can opt for various colours and styles. Once installed it will change how your garden looks or how you see your garden!

You can also consider installing a sand box for the children in the garden corner so they can enjoy the garden as much as you. We also suggest lights along the edging or flower bed. It will look beautiful and make your home come alive in the night. You must construct a garden shed to store all your equipment and manure. Last, but not the least, consider some garden furniture to add to the space for Sunday morning breakfasts!

No wonder so many people enjoy gardening! It has proven to be a delightful pastime which also eliminates stress and makes people feel more relaxed. To do a good job gardening, you will need a number of different tools. One that belongs in any tool shed is a garden spading fork.

Gardening tools are made for every job in the yard. Some tools are more versatile and can be used in many applications, while others are job-specific. A garden spading fork is one of the most useful tools you can buy. They are made of either stainless or carbon steel in order to increase their longevity when being exposed to the elements and so that they don’t rust.

Garden Spading Fork vs. Pitchfork

A garden spading fork looks very similar to a dinner fork with a handle on one end and tines on the other. In spite of the fact that they have a lot of differences, many people want to confuse a spading fork with a pitchfork. If you take a look at both of them, however, you’ll see how different they really are. A spading fork has short, thick tines that are flat and spaced close together. Its handle is shorter and tipped with a “D”-shaped grip. A pitchfork, on the other hand, has a long, straight handle and longer, thinner tines which are rounded and set farther apart.

Reasons for Using a Garden Spading Fork

People use garden spading forks for jobs that are like those performed with a shovel or spade. A spading fork has tines that are thick and close together so that it can easily lift and carry a substantial amount of soil. Having tines like it does, it’s easier to use than a spade when loosening soil.

You’ll find that your garden spading fork is a necessity when it comes to digging root crops like potatoes or yams out of the soil. You can also use your spading fork to rake stones from garden soil as well as to dig larger holes. In fact, a spading fork is even easier to use for digging holes than a spade. Due to the pointed tines on the fork, it will pierce even the hardest ground.

You’ll probably find many more uses for your garden spading fork than those that were touched on in this article. It’s heavy-duty enough to take on most tough jobs, and it can be used more effectively in some instances than a spade. You’ll never be sorry that you decided to add a spading fork to your garden tool kit. In fact, it may become your most-used tool.

If you have the time and the inclination to create an organic summer garden there are few better ways to go when it comes to the potential impact on the planet. A summer garden is a thing of beauty to be enjoyed by all you invite into your garden. That being said, there are certain pests we’d all like to keep out of our gardens as well. The problem is that the pesticides of the past have undetermined side effects that have the potential to cause lasting harm. If we can avoid introducing those chemicals to our own gardens we are protecting our kids from dangers we may not even be aware of yet and protecting the other animals that may innocently come in contact with our gardens such as birds and butterflies from being harmed by the chemicals present in most common pesticides.

What does this mean to gardeners when it comes to efforts directed towards keeping out potential pests? Quite honestly, it means we are going to have to get a little bit creative in those efforts turning to natural solutions rather than chemicals. One way in which this can quite easily be accomplished is by encouraging animals that prey upon the pests to make your garden their home. Of course, this could potentially bring about its own set of problems but from a gardening perspective it is often very sound reasoning.

Use organic mulch. While this isn’t necessarily a means of pest control it is a wise move when it comes to organic gardening. Not only does the mulch provide the very useful mulching properties throughout the growing season but once the growing season has ended can be turned over and used in order to boost the organic material within the soil. This in turns provides nutrients that are important to keeping the soil fit for sustaining plant life in future growing seasons.

Attract birds to your garden. This has a two-fold benefit for the organic gardener. First of all the birds are often natural predators for many of the bugs that make a nuisance of themselves in the average summer garden. Second, birds leave behind their own little fertilizing additions to the landscape of your garden. Don’t you wish all solutions were this simple?

Keep your garden healthy, well fertilized, watered regularly and appropriately, and free of weeds. A good offense is the best defense. A good immune system and constant hand washing are the best defense the human body has against catching colds and viruses. The same holds true for gardens and their ability to fight pests. Keep your garden strong and healthy and it will repel many of the pests that may cripple other gardens on its own. It certainly doesn’t hurt anything to keep this philosophy in mind and you may be amazed at how well it works.

Organic gardening is more than a plan for your garden it is a return to the ways of old in the world of gardening. For centuries before pesticides were created man managed to live off the abundance of his gardens. It makes sense that by returning to those ideals we can also enjoy great food and a bountiful harvest in the modern world. Make the choice today to make your summer garden an organic garden and reap the benefit in better health and greater enjoyment of the gardening process.

It’s October now and soon the winter is coming. There is nothing better in the winter than to have a nice and relaxing hot water in bathtub. But to make the warm water you are going to need some heat; and if you don’t have any electric or gas water heater because it’s too expensive and you just can’t afford to pay the bill; then another source of heat might worth to consider. And what’s better source of heat than the burning fire itself?

And so to save your gas or electric bill while at the same time enjoy the nice and warm bath in your tub, I think the wood burning stove would be a great solution. The wood burning stove? Isn’t too old to use now? Well don’t worry, today’s wood burning stoves burn much cleaner than any previous models.

The EPA Rated Wood Stoves can produce 7.5 grams or even less smoke per hour; much less than the usual 40 gram/hour in average that older Wood Stoves produced! And, you should also consider to use pellet wood stoves for these particular reasons: chopped wood and gas prices are still continuing to rise and using the recycled wood as its fuel would makes sense. See the entire collection of wood burning stoves and pellet burning stoves from fireplaces now the leading online fireplaces store.

Whether you would like to add beauty to your deck, patio or landscape, topiaries create elegance and are perfect for any garden. Create a focal point in your garden herb collection with potted herb topiary at the kitchen door.

Consider growing topiary to add height and a formal touch to your container garden or simply create fun design for a conversation piece. Topiaries are made by clipping plants into a great variety of forms – by tradition, they can be either geometric shape or animal figures. Wire forms have made it very easy to style topiaries into various shapes and sizes.

The most popular choice for covering the wire forms is ivy – there are English Ivy, Variegated Algerian Ivy and Swedish Ivy. Look for cultivars that feature interesting, variegated or deeply cut leaves. Try creating a topiary that features two different ivies with contrasting shapes and colors. There are a great many choices for your wire-form topiaries such as Creeping fig, Jasmines, Purple bell vine and Trailing abutilon. To train a plant to a form, simply insert the form in the pot or container, fasten the stems to whatever part of the form you want to cover. Use coated wire of soft string ties to secure the plant’s stems to the form as they grow.

Most suitable for container gardens is the classic form of topiary – pruned cones or spheres of foliage. What is required, however, is a beautiful pot or planter to show off your handy work. For balance, usually the container is similar in size to the mature head of the topiary’s foliage. This green sculpture is the standard, a plant that has been trained so that it has a single, bare stem topped by a dense, rounded, leafy top. Training a standard takes a bit of patience, however, you can begin with one already started in your garden center or nursery. Roses as well as herbs such as common myrtle, sweet bay and rosemary are traditional plants for standards. Others may be Flowering maples, Scented geraniums, Lantana and Coleus. Small leaved evergreen plants are most suitable for topiary training as well.

To create a standard, train a single-stemmed plant up a long stake, then trim the tip of the plan to form a rough ball on top of the stem. Make sure the stem is not tied too tightly to the stake or the ties can cut off the supply of water and nutrients to the top of the plant. As the main stem grows, gradually remove any side branches started at the base of the plant. Once the main stem has reached the desired height, pinch the tips of the branches at the top regularly to encourage a full rounded ball of foliage.

Care for topiaries the same way you would regular plants of the same type. The only extra step you need to do is trim the plant regularly to maintain the shape. Fast growing plants may need trimming every few weeks to keep their shape – slower growing species may not need clipping once or twice a year.

It’s easy to buy ready-trained topiary, but it’s fun and satisfying to make your own.
